Autumn Leaves II
‘Synergy’ 2016 Birnam Arts Centre, Birnam
Autumn Leaves II captures the form and movement of leaves from the
500-year-old Birnam Oak tree, which dance in the wind before they settle
on the ground to form a leaf-mould carpet. The ancient Birnam Oak is
one of the last remaining trees of the fabled Great Birnam Wood, which
was celebrated by Shakespeare in Macbeth, at the south bank of River
Tay.
Never-ending features an architectural framework adorned
with oak leaves. It makes reference to the extensive wooden scaffolding
props that are needed to support the heavy branches and canopy of the
old Birnam Oak. The work suggests that the ongoing effort in preserving
the oak tree is comparable to that of historic houses and champions the
preservation of green space within our lived environment.
